Salespeople at the top of their game know that listening to a customer is much more important than pitching to a customer. The pitch can come later. What you need to do up front is understand the customer. Without effective listening skills, you won’t hear a thing they say.

Effective listening will enable you to understand what your client’s business challenges are. They will enable you to understand your customer’s growth objectives. Best of all, effective listening skills will help put you in a position to connect your value statement to their business issues.

Effective listening tips that top salespeople employ include the following;

  • Give your customer every chance to fully express themselves. Avoid interrupting with the temptation to talk about yourself and your product.
  • Ask if you can take notes. It will help you focus on what the customer is saying. It will show the client you are truly paying attention to their issues.
  • Reconfirm what your customer has said. Recap the most important points at the conclusion of your meeting. Make sure you are walking away with the most relevant points.
  • Listen with your eyes. Take note of the customer’s body language. Facial expressions and body position can be an obvious indicator of a client’s interest in what you are saying.
  • Provide non-verbal confirmation you are listening. Eye contact with the customer as they speak is key to encourage them to continue sharing their issues.
