Many below average salespeople have poor listening skills. Poor listening results in missed opportunities and meager sales. Don’t be in this group. Be with the cream of the selling crop and make a conscious effort to improve your listening skills.
Below are some active listening samples to help you with your daily client communication. Practice and profit!
- Use your mind to shut out any distractions inside and outside of the room you are in. Intently concentrate on the conversation and what is being said.
- Repeat in your mind everything the person has said. It takes concentration. After a few moments you should be firmly entrenched in the conversation.
- Ask yourself a series of internal questions. Things like “How is that relevant?”, “What is she really trying to say?” and “How will this effect me?”. These types of questions will keep you and on track and provide you deeper insight in the conversation.
- At the start of a meeting empty your mind of any downbeat or distracting thoughts. Tell yourself you will deal only with the matters at hand and stick to it.
- Never interrupt. It will distract both you and your customer. Wait for a natural pause in the discussion to make your point. If it is a question on your mind you can always come back to it later.
- Ask questions directly related to what was just said. This will keep you focused on the communication and your client connected to the conversation.
- In the form of verbal encouragement use words like “uh-huh”, “yes” and “ok”. This keeps you interested and shows your client you are still engaged in the conversation.
- Don’t’ be afraid to take notes. It will keep your mind from wandering. By writing down the highlights of what is being said, you will need to use all of your listening skills.
